Shane Dwight
  • Shane Dwight

  • Thursday, September 16
  • 6:30 p.m.

Northern California native, now Nashville-based, Shane Dwight is a young American Roots Music artist for the 21st century – a killer blues player who can rock the house all night long with the best of them, and an introspective singer-songwriter whose voice rings true at alt-country, Americana, R&B, and flat-out Rock N Roll. There is no pigeon hole for Shane Dwight, and no single corral can hold this bucking bronco. Shane’s talent is so fierce and his inspiration so strong that his music draws in equal measure from classic blues and urban R&B, from alt-country and modern rock without compromising his integrity or missing a beat.

Shane Dwight cut his teeth on the rough and tumble East Side of San Jose, California, where his natural talents were influenced by the neighborhood’s diverse musical undercurrents. He became proficient at various styles, and played in jazz and rock bands before finding this groove with the blues. Shane’s popularity spread quickly, and in 2002 he easily won the Monterey Blues Festival Battle of the Bands. Since that time Shane has released several self-produced CD’s and kept up a hectic schedule, appearing at countless clubs and festival Main Stages including Florida’s “Springing the Blues” Festival, the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival, the San Diego Blues Festival and many more; Shane’s energetic performances and charismatic appeal have made him a great performer on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruises; Shane provided the house band for the nationally televised “Microsoft Insider Live”, appeared twice as a featured guest on Elwood Blues’ House of Blues Radio Hour, and received airplay on hundreds of radio stations worldwide.

Recently, Shane moved to Nashville, Tennessee and signed with the prestigious Intrepid Artists booking agency. This year he will perform over 150 shows throughout the U.S. Shane Dwight’s rocket is definitely on the rise!

John Lee Hooker Jr.
  • John Lee Hooker Jr.

  • Thursday, September 16
  • 8:30 p. m.

John Lee Hooker Jr. was born in Detroit “Motor” City with Delta blues-filled blood running through his Motown veins. The son of the great John Lee Hooker, he was exposed to the life of the blues from a young age. At only eight years old Jr. performed on Detroit’s WJBK radio and knew from that moment that he wanted to follow the path of his father and become a world-class musician. Touring alongside Hooker, Sr. throughout his teens, Jr. had already performed in prestigious venues such as Detroit’s Fox Theatre with acclaimed musicians like Jimmy Reed by the time he was 16. In 1972 an 18 year-old John Jr. was singing vocals alongside his father for the recording of Hooker, Sr.’s album Live at Soledad Prison (ABC Records).

Unfortunately, while living the “life of a bluesman” he succumbed to the demons that surround it, derailing his music career for many, many years. Drugs, alcohol, divorce, incarceration, and death nearly brought his once promising career to a screeching halt, but it was living the blues and his faith in the Almighty that resurrected Hooker Jr. With the support of his family and friends, and a crew of talented musicians who never ceased to believe in him, Hooker Jr. finally found his own inner muse, making music that expresses the depth of emotion he has experienced in his personal life.

His first album, Blues with a Vengeance (Kent Records), is what he called his “celebratory redemption.” After struggling through the years of extreme hardship and nearly losing himself to the streets, the remarkable John Lee Hooker Jr. overcame the adversity to begin a rapid emergence into the blues spotlight. Released in April 2004, Blues with a Vengeance certainly lived up to its name by wrapping up 2004 with a Grammy nomination for a distinguished W.C. Handy Award as Best New Artist Debut. The California Music Awards (formerly the BAMMY’S) named Blues with a Vengeance 2004’s Outstanding Blues Album of the Year, and the Bay Area Blues Society presented John Lee Hooker Jr. with the 2004 Comeback Artist of the Year award, as he performed alongside world-class musicians Jimmy Reed, BB King, Bo Diddley, Lenny Kravitz, Taj Mahal, Koko Taylor, Charlie Musselwhite, Etta James and John Lee Hooker Sr.

Cold as Ice, Hooker Jr.’s second album was released by Telarc Records in June of 2006 and showed his progression as a contemporary blues artist. Blending his roots with a modern sound, his style is indicative of his Motown base. Music enthusiasts describe his style as R&B, Jazz, Funk and “down home blues.” While the record did not gather as much attention as his debut, it received positive reviews across the board and solidified Hooker Jr. as one of the blues’ rising stars. Epitomizing the synthesis between traditional blues and the new age funk, the record pays homage to his father while at others it blazes a trail of its own.

John Lee Hooker Jr. releases his third CD, All Odds Against Me, only to discover the impact it has made worldwide in its infancy it has generated a 2008 Grammy nomination. Hooker Jr. continues to carry the blues into the 21st century. The 12-song album was released domestically on Jr.’s own ‘Steppin’ Stone Records and in Europe on Jazzhaus Records, is his first effort to include only new, original tracks, a contrast to either of his previous solo projects.

Additionally, Jr. continues to stretch the envelope, becoming blues’ first animated superhero in a cartoon included on the enhanced disc. The first episode of “Bluesman” introduces Hooker Jr. as a crime-fighting musician singing in clubs by night and cleaning up the streets by day. Conceived by Frenchman Laurent Mercier at the Callicore Animation Studios in Paris, the video series has also inspired work to begin on a comic book. Mercier, son of a French jazzman contemporary of Hooker Sr., dreamt up the idea as a way for the two sons to pay tribute to their fathers’ legacies and Jr. immediately embraced the vision. Set to “Blues Ain’t Nothing but a Pimp” from Blues with a Vengeance, the video is the first of three to be released in 2008.

From the gravely blues of the Detroit streets to a new era of sound; from the shadow of his father’s accomplishments to standing apart from his namesake; from criminal to crime-fighter; from San Quentin to the Red Carpet, it’s no wonder the album is called All Odds Against Me. John Lee Hooker Jr. has built upon his colorful past as he continues to distinguish himself as a contemporary “Bluesman.”

Edgar Winter
  • Edgar Winter

  • Saturday, September 18
  • 7 & 9 p.m.

By the time Edgar Winter left his hometown of Beaumont, Texas in the 1960’s, he was already technically proficient in every aspect of music. A child prodigy who achieved international success early on, Edgar has found an audience in every major entertainment medium-music, film and television. A prolific writer, Edgar’s music encompasses many different genres, including rock, jazz, blues and pop. From his critically acclaimed 1970 debut release, Entrance, he has demonstrated his unique style and ability to cross the genre lines and do the unexpected. His early recording of “Tobacco Road” is a powerful, emotionally devastating masterpiece that propelled him into the national spotlight. Edgar followed Entrance with two hit albums backed by his group White Trash, a group originally comprised of musicians from Texas and Louisiana. White Trash enjoyed huge success, both with the 1971 release of the studio album, Edgar Winter’s White Trash, and with the 1972’s follow-up live gold album, Roadwork.

In late 1972 Edgar brought together Dan Hartman, Ronnie Montrose and Chuck Ruff to form the Edgar Winter Group, the legendary band that created such hits as the number one Frankenstein, and the ever popular Free Ride. Released in 1973, They Only Come Out At Night peaked at the number 3 position on the Billboard Hot 200 and stayed on the charts for an impressive 80 weeks. It was certified gold in April 1973 and double platinum in November 1986. Edgar invented the keyboard body strap early in his career, an innovation that allows him the freedom to move around on stage during his multi-instrument high-energy performances. He was also the first artist to feature a synthesizer as the main instrument in a song. Frankenstein revolutionized rock and roll and opened up a while new world of possibilities with experimentation and sound.

After They Only Come Out At Night, Edgar released Shock Treatment, featuring guitarist Rick Derringer in place of Ronnie Montrose. Later albums included Jasmine Nightdreams, The Edgar Winter Group with Rick Derringer, a live album, Together Live with Johnny Winter, Recycled, a reunion with White Trash, Standing on Rock, Mission Earth, Live in Japan, Not A Kid Anymore, The Real Deal and Winter Blues.

With over 20 albums and numerous collaborative efforts to his credit, Edgar Winter has not been satisfied to ride the wave of popular music stardom. Major national television and radio campaigns have relied on Edgar’s music to advertise their products. Edgar has also made frequent television appearances, both to promote his music and to give his opinions on everything from Politically Incorrect to a commercial with George Hamilton for Miller Lite beer. He has appeared in the film “Netherworld”, and the TV shows “The Cape”, “Mysterious Ways”, “Dave Letterman”, and “Jimmy Kimmel”.

Edgar’s music can be heard in no fewer than fifteen film and television projects including Netherworld, Air American, My Cousin Vinny, Encino Man, Son in Law, What’s Love Got to Do with It, Wayne’s World 2, Starkid, Wag the Dog, Knockabout Guys, Duets, Radio, The Simpsons, Queer as Folk and Tupac Resurrection. Edgar’s hauntingly beautiful song, Dying to Live, is featured as “Runnin” (Dying to Live) in the film “Tupac Resurrection”, the biography on the life of rapper Tupac Shakur. Produced by Eminem, the song uses the vocal talents of the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac and Edgar Winter himself. “Runnin” is on numerous Billboard charts. It peaked at number 5 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles Sales chart, and the soundtrack CD was number 1 for eight consecutive weeks.

Edgar’s CD and DVD, titled, Live at the Galaxy was recorded live at the Galaxy Theatre for Classic Pictures in 2003. It features the songs “Keep Playing That Rock and Roll”, “Turn On Your Love light”, “Free Ride”, “Texas”, “Show Your Love”, “New Orleans”, “Frankenstein” and “Tobacco Road”. In addition, the DVD includes a 30 minute documentary, “Edgar Winter: The Man and His Music”.

Edgar Winter’s live shows consistently receive rave reviews. His music is always evolving and he is a master at stretching his skill and imagination to produce amazing results. He continues to thrill audiences with his live performances, always remaining on the cutting edge of music and style.
